I'm Sexy & I Know It

Sing it with me... "I’m too Sexy …"

We just had several of our male youth mentors walk the catwalk to this song last night at our Infuse youth service. We've been doing a series called, "Flesh: Conversations btwn. the sheets & in the locker rooms." It's been pretty revealing, to say the least.

So, what would it look like to know that you are a sexy person?

I was looking through a SexTester online, and this was one of the questions on the, “R U SEXY?” Test!
Are you hot?
- Very!
- I'm, like, on fire!
- Yes
- Kinda' average
- Not really
- No way! Roadkill is more attractive

We laugh at this, but the majority of our public is wired this way… there’s a reason why every magazine has all of those sex tests/quizzes in there… if it didn’t work, they wouldn’t publish it! People want to feel sexy and go to extreme measure to appear like they GOT IT!

So, What does sexy look like?

When I say, SEXY, … WHO pops in your mind?
Victoria’s  Secret models? Bradley Cooper, Team Jake & a lot of vampires?

The world would have us believe that these people are SEXY! And, we would probably all agree… but what if being sexy is something very different from having rock hard abs, long legs and chiseled features?

What if Male Model, Derek Zoolander, was on to something…?
… “What if there was more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good looking?"

….

In 1945 British soldiers liberated a German concentration camp… This is what they saw:
“I can give no adequate description of the Horror camp of which my men were to spend the next month of our lives… Corpses lay everywhere. Some in huge piles… women drowning in their own vomit because they were too weak to turn over, men eating worms … a dysentery tank in which the remains of a child floated.” – Lieutenant Colonel Mercin Willet Gonin DSO

This account is shocking? Everyone with a fraction of a conscience would agree… but why?

It’s anti human!

Concentration camps = Anti human!

Everyone would agree with me on this truth!

Here’s another truth that most of us don’t think of…

Being SEXY in our world = Anti human!

The LMFAO song and video, “I’m sexy and I know it” is a reminder that most of our society views us as anti-human. “Girl… look at that body… I work out!”… To be sexy the way our world views being “sexy” is horribly toxic like a WW2 concentration camp.

We can’t escape it!

Who’s hot?

Who’s not?

Guys grading girls, 1-10! In reality, our society has become  anti human & a bit animalistic.

Listen to the way we talk…

“She’s a DOG!”
“He’s a Party Animal”’
“Dude, she jumped my bones.”
“She’s a tiger!”
“Basic instinct.”
“We are on the prowl…”

Maybe you’ve heard of the videos, “Girls gone wild.” or MTV’s Spring Break specials.  MTV loves to exploit young men and women at Cancun, Panama City Beach or South Padre island. It’s like all of these people have suppressed all of these deep-seated desires, thrown caution to the wind and let themselves go for brief stints only to take the reigns back on a Monday morning!

“Wow, I can’t believe I did that last night.”
“You were out of control.”
“We lost our minds.”

Beyonce knows this quite well. Check out the lyrics to her new song, Party!

You a bad girl and your friends bad too
I told my girls you can get it
Don't slow it down, just let it go
I'll give it all away
Just don't tell nobody tomorrow
So tonight
I'll do it every way
Speakers knockin' till the morning light
'Cause we like to party-y-y-y-y-y-y

In the ancient Greek world, people used a phrase,
“Food for the stomach and the stomach for food.”

They understood a person to be a collection of their physical needs. In essence, sex is like food. If you are hungry, just go for it! It is what it is…You might hear people say that the apostle Paul challenges this thinking in his letter to the Corinthian church, elevating their thinking beyond animalistic tendencies. The problem with this view, as Paul writes, is that it teaches people that we are just like dogs!

… When “She” becomes “That”… a piece of meat…  we know we’ve drifted a LONG way off!

Being like animals and pieces of meat…

Is clearly, ANTI-human!

Just like the treatment in the WW2 concentration camps…

We sacrifice what it means to be human, when we resort to simply want to “give into our urges.”

Well, a man has needs, right?

Tell me this… if everyone gave into his or her supposed “needs” and “urges” you would have a jacked up society with much worse than a bunch of couch potatoes!

"Well, I just want to punch this officer in the face right now b/c I felt like speeding and he’s being too strict! It’s my urge… just let me give myself into it!"

… ANTI-human.

How we treat creation, other guys and girls, reflects how we feel about our Creator!

Dudes, you are MEN!

Ladies, you are WOMEN!

I want to show you that you are meant to reflect another kind of sexy image!

Some would say that we live in an oversexed world? Sex on the movies… sex on TV… Mags… XXX websites… it’s everywhere! But I think we live in an UNDER-sexed world. And, I think we don’t have a clue what being SEXY is all about.

To be a Christian in the fullest sense means that we are the SEXIEST people in the world… but we gotta teach one another what that REALLY means!

Wanna know what it means to be SEXY?

It all begins in the BEGINNING…

“So G-d created man in his own image…” -  Genesis 1:27

This Hebrew word, “tselem,” means image or reflection. We radiate the glory of G-d!

v. 28 “G-d blessed them.” – To be blessed means to have the SHALOM of G-d = peace/harmony … dancing ONE with G-d, everything is connected and in its right place. Heaven on earth!

Often, we fail to see this truth that the Creator of the Universe blessed us. Paul, the apostle, goes on to say to this church in Ephesus that we have been blessed in the heavenly realms with EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ! When it comes to blessing, we lack NOTHING!

I think we see this when a baby is born into the world. We see the beauty, innocence, and for a moment we believe this truth! But the older we get, we fail to see this truth, and begin treating people with disrespect. And, when we treat G-d’s greatest creations with disgrace, we treat the LORD with disgrace because it’s all connected!

So, our 1st  & greatest dimension of sexuality is with G-d, the divine, the Maker of all good things!

Next time you look in the mirror… there’s a reflection of that which is divine, glorious, resplendent! We are all made in the image of G-d, working on our new humanity! It’s time to bring back our true identity, our dignity, and our beautiful image!

However, when we hear the word, FLESH, we have a misconstrued notion and understanding. Even the Greeks and philosophers during Jesus’ and Paul’s days thought flesh was bad, yucky, nasty & sinful!

Scripture reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made… .”

Remember, we were originally created as sexual beings that were in full connection with G-d, humanity and our environment!

Sadly, the problem comes early in our story… Chapter 3 of Genesis! You know what happened. The man and wife ate the bad fruit & everything began to fall apart… disconnected, divided, incomplete and aching for restoration!

Now, go back with me to the 1st Century when Jesus was around… he was crucified for our sins, and then we see him in a garden tomb raised from the dead! It all started in a garden & it ends in a garden! Jesus begins to reverse this curse and begins to put it all back together again… This has been the goal of G-d ever since man and woman ate from the bad fruit!

You might be asking yourself, “What does this have to do with sexuality and being sexy?” Well, it has everything to do with sexuality!

Remember, we are living in an undersexed world, and are confused with everything pertaining to the word, SEX.

In fact, the word – SEX – comes from a Latin word, which means, “secare” which means to cut off, sever, amputate or dissect… that which is taken from the whole… Thus, sexuality has 2 dimensions here. Our sexuality reminds us that we’ve been disconnected… man waking up, saying, “There’s something wrong with this world.” And, secondly, sex is our attempt to try and reconnect to that, which has been broken.

In a nutshell: Something is not right, and we are trying to reconnect ourselves to whatever it is that is lacking.

That’s why she wears THAT!
&
He struts like THIS,
&
Why THEY find the need to behave like…
THOSE things.
We are just trying to reconnect!
We crave feeling needed, wanted and accepted in our world, and we’ll do whatever it takes to find that place of wholeness.

Physical sex/intercourse – while vastly important, but only with a full understanding of this - is just a small part of our innate desire to be connected!

I heard someone say, “We are built to ultimately embrace the universe and everything in it.”Have you ever had strong, rich connections and you didn’t want to leave that moment?

Perhaps it was a concert, hiking out in nature… and there’s a reason why people have such a strong connection when they have sex!

You see… SEX isn’t just about 2 bodies that are fumbling around in the covers. Being SEXY doesn’t just mean 2 people who want to jump one another, going at it like animals… Being sexy isn’t just about having a good body and knowing how to use it.

A sexual being is much richer! It’s time for us to reconnect the dots in the fullest sense! Practically speaking, being sexy might not have anything to do with sex or throwing out the latest attractional vibe to the girl next door.

Some single people or virgins are the most sexual people in the world. Non-physically sexual people are still VERY sexual. Because being SEXY is about finding your true identity, connecting with G-d, and connecting with others in meaningful ways.

These people are sexy…Pictures of Mother Teresa, Tim Tebow, Martin Luther & David Crowder

A saint like Mother Theresa can be sexy! Weird but true…  WATCH out Justin Timberlake. Momma T is bringing SEXY BACK!

King David was a man after G-d’s heart, but he WASN’T the best looking of his brothers.  Still, the LORD picked him to be King of Israel because G-d looked in his heart. Jesus, described in Scripture, was not good looking, but incredibly attractive! Men, like NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow, who really isn’t that great of a football player btw, is SEXY because he is confident in his convictions and stands boldly for his faith... the world would say, “He’s a good man!” David Crowder looks like a goat, but has an amazing gift of creativity, leading others into worship. And MLK was sexy because he was a voice for the voiceless and a powerful activist in our country for peace and justice.

Recall: Divine energy is not just physical bodies knocking back and forth.

We have been disconnected and now we are on a journey to restore our connections in a way that makes sense.

The word’s version of being sexy is rooted in self-centeredness, insecurity and a false identity that tries so badly to “fit in” to being cool! If you are trying to look sexy, you will come up empty every time. There’s a reason why people in Hollywood go through vast amounts of plastic surgery and have major eating disorders… They are trying to connect and be sexy, but are empty at the end of the day!

So, what does it mean to say, “I’M SEXY & I KNOW IT?”

Believe it or not… PAUL, knew what it meant to be SEXY! In this letter, he writes to the church in Philippi from prison. His dignity was stripped from him. His own people threw him out of the synagogue; his own family circle. He had EVERYTHING the world could offer him, and lost it all by choice! And, that is when he truly found himself…

One group of people Paul challenged was trying to find their worth in success, power & popularity. The other guys were trying to find their worth in religious achievement, rooted in the same sickness! He calls out a group of men who were putting their confidence in the “FLESH!” In fact, he calls them, DOGS!

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ  and be found in him…” – Philippians 3:4-9

The main concern for Paul was being found in Christ Jesus… becoming like him! That is where he found his true worth and dignity. He later goes on to speak of the finding the “secret of being content”… as he writes, like I said, from prison!

I heard someone once say, “Being sexy is when it feels good to be in your own skin.”

You are more and more okay with who you are, and you don’t need the “things” the world tells us. As I’m more and more okay with who I am, I don’t need the approval of others. I don’t need to become an animal and feel regret in the morning. I’m less bitter toward others and more grateful and respectful toward God and his beautiful and sexual creation.

I AM RESTORED … and helping others RESTORE their identity … I’m SEXY on the inside! What the world tells you is empty. Remember, who you are, made in the image of G-d!

Ladies, no swimsuit, pair of heels or guy gives you your sexual worth.

Guys, no 6 pack, gun show or sexual conquest will give you your sexiness!

Because being SEXY is about truly knowing who you are in Christ!

Say it together, loud and proud, “I’M SEXY, AND I KNOW IT!”
